How Is Baltic Amber Formed?
Amber begins as tree resin. Millions of years ago, ancient trees released resin that became buried in layers of sediment. Over an extremely long period of time, chemical and physical changes gradually transformed the resin into the material we now know as amber.
This is why amber is often described as fossilized resin rather than a traditional mineral or gemstone.
Some pieces may contain natural particles, tiny plant material or other inclusions that became trapped in the resin before it hardened. Other pieces can appear clear, cloudy or almost opaque.
